At approximately 4:16 p.m. Monday, the Yonkers Police Department Communications Division received a call from a resident relating that a suspicious van was in the area of 4 Schroeder St.

The occupants of the van were allegedly attempting to break into a parking meter. A description was broadcast to units on patrol and a short time later, a marked patrol unit observed this suspect vehicle traveling in the area of North Broadway, police said.

When the suspect vehicle was observed, officers confirmed upon prior knowledge that the vehicle registration was previously reported stolen out of the City of Yonkers.

Initial investigation indicates, the marked unit followed the suspect vehicle in attempt to pull the vehicle over. Northbound on Warburton Avenue, prior to Odell Avenue, the suspect vehicle struck a sedan travelling southbound on Warburton Avenue.

The driver of the sedan was pronounced deceased at the scene. Notifications are being made to next of kin and the deceased driver of the sedan is only being identified at this time as an adult female Yonkers resident, police said.

The two occupants of the suspect vehicle sustained very serious injuries and both were transported to local trauma centers.

An immediate investigation began at the scene and is ongoing.

Warburton Avenue is closed from Arthur Street to Odell Avenue due to the ongoing investigation.
