City officials, residents, business owners and organizations are invited to come together in prayer as “Mount Vernon seeks strength, wisdom, salvation, guidance and protection,” at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday at City Hall Plaza.

An interdenominational prayer will be delivered by various religious leaders from churches around Mount Vernon. Following that prayer, scriptures, readings and music will be provided to those observing the holiday.

The National Day of Prayer was signed into law in 1952 by former President Harry S. Truman. It is held on the first Thursday of May each year.
