Mount Vernon Woman Gets 10 Years In Her Newborn's Slaying

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – The Mount Vernon woman who fatally suffocated her newborn last summer was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Kadian Gilzeane, 28, pleaded guilty on June 11 in state Supreme Court to first-degree manslaughter in the Aug. 3, 2012 death, She wrapped her son in plastic bags shortly after giving birth.

Prosecutors said that Gilzeane gave birth that morning in the bathroom of her North 9th Avenue apartment, cutting the umbilical cord with scissors. She then wrapped the infant in plastic bags and put him under the sink.

Later that day, she went to Mount Vernon Hospital and reported that she had suffered a miscarriage. Staff members recognized that she had given birth and alerted authorities.

The infant was found in two plastic bags in the apartment during the police investigation. Gilzeane eventually admitted the crime while she was still at the hospital.

Gilzeane faced a maximum of 25 years in prison.
