On Tuesday, Dec. 29, on the corner of Fleetwood Avenue and West Broad Street, developers will team with local elected officials for a groundbreaking ceremony for the much-maligned and oft-discussed project.

Nearly one year ago, officials approved a special permit allowing the Alexander Development Group and its partner, the Bluestone Organization, to begin renovating the retail building and parking garage into a 249-unit apartment complex complete with approximately 15,000-square-feet of commercial space near the Metro-North station.

The project proved to be a divisive issue in Mount Vernon, with some locals encouraged by the socioeconomic benefits of the upscale project, while others have argued that the towering building will change the culture and feel of the upcoming neighborhood. There was a year’s worth of discussion between the public and developers before city officials gave the project the green light to move forward.

The groundbreaking will start at 3 p.m., with a reception and holiday party kicking off an hour later. Those interested in attending can RSVP online, by calling (914) 363-9299 ext. 111 or by emailing rsvp@mountvernonrising.com.
