MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. -- There are dozens of unsightly abandoned homes in Mount Vernon, and the city’s mayor is seeking funding to either tear them down or fix them up, according to a report by lohud.

It’s not just that the “zombie” homes are a ugly and can affect the property values in their neighborhoods, there are safety issues involved, Richard Thomas told lohud.

The city razed one of the homes, on Park Avenue, this week, according to cbslocal.com. The home was deemed unsafe and was actually tilting, according to media reports.

In Mount Vernon, there are close to 40 abandoned homes that have cost the city $7.8 million in lost value to neighbors, the cbslocal.com report said.
