Thomas was joined by members of the USDA, which has approved 30 food service sites for the Summer Food Service Program in the city, which was implemented to ensure that children receive healthy meals during the summer that they would have received during the school year.
The meals are offered free to Mount Vernon children that are under the age of 18. The USDA is expected to serve more than 200 million meals throughout the country to children during this summer.
According to officials, of the 30 sites, many are located at schools, which allows students to participate in summer activities that include camps and recreation programs before enjoying their healthy meal.
