Mount Vernon Officials Develop Five-Year Housing Plan

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – City officials are seeking input from the public as they prepare a five-year consolidated plan to remain eligible for federal funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

On Tuesday, the city opened an online survey it developed that will be available for one month, asking about the availability and viability of affordable housing in Mount Vernon.

Since the city receives federal funds from HUD, it is required to submit a consolidated plan, first-year plan and an analysis of impediments to fair housing that is reviewed by officials every five years.

According to city officials upon the announcement of the survey, “Mount Vernon receives funding under the Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) program through the county of Westchester and Supportive Housing Program (SHP) funds through the Continuum of Care (CoC),” programs designed to allow access to affordable, well-maintained housing for low-income families.

Questions on the survey range from asking about the availability of affordable housing for various demographics, the condition of homes in several locations and what is most important when looking for affordable places to live. The entire 12-question survey is designed to take less than 15 minutes.

Interested parties can fill out the survey online or pick up hard copies at the clerk’s office and the Department of Planning and Community Development at City Hall or at the Mount Vernon Public Library.
