MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – Neighbors of 8-10 S. 9th Ave., where a 27-year old woman is accused of murdering her newborn, said they are not so much "shocked" by the baby's death as they are "aggravated" by this new black eye for the city.

Kadian Gilzeane of Mount Vernon is charged with second-degree murder in the asphyxiation death of her newborn son, called “Baby Boy Gilzeane” in court papers. Gilzeane was charged on Thursday, Aug. 9. The baby was killed on Aug. 3, according to court documents.

Most residents questioned didn’t feel comfortable giving their names, and none expressed sympathy for Gilzeane. However, resident Rashina McDonald said Gilzeane might have been going through postpartum depression.

“I have a newborn myself, so it hits home for me," said McDonald. "Still, it’s not shocking to me, because this is Mount Vernon."

McDonald added that while Gilzeane looked familiar, she doesn’t know her.
