Mount Vernon Examining Tennis Courts At Memorial Field

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. - The tennis courts at Memorial Field will have to be brought up to the standards of the United States Tennis Association (USTA) during any renovation that will take place, according to Mayor Ernie Davis.

Davis said that work has been done in-house to renovate Memorial Field, which includes improving the tennis courts. The City Council approved asking for bids for the reconstruction at its last meeting, including creating six new indoor tennis courts as well as renovating the bleacher area.

Davis said that the tennis courts need to be shifted to the south by 15 feet from their current location. There is also a deep slope that needs to be filled meaning that a wall needs to be constructed to remedy the problem before a bubble roof is built. Though the project is out for bid, no price tag to reconstruct the tennis courts has been announced.

"We've been waiting too long for this renovation," said Councilwoman Deborah Reynolds. "The community needs a place to go as an outlet. I hope the job gets done correctly since we are asking residents for money to pay for this."

Thus far no date has been set for the renovations to begin.
