MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. The Mount Vernon City Council has discussed adding bicycle lanes to some city streets to make it more transit-oriented for its residents.
Councilman Richard Thomas brought the idea up to his colleagues at the City Councils meeting Tuesday night adding that it would be appropriate since the city has a Bike-A-Thon coming up on Sept. 23. Since crosswalks around the schools will be repainted to make them brighter in the coming weeks, Thomas said it was the right time to start a dialogue about other road improvements.
Mount Vernon is only four square miles and is hospitable to 20-minute living, Thomas said. A lot of communities like Port Chester have them. We need to evaluate that because thats what people want.
Though no plans or money are currently in place for bicycle lanes, Roberta Apuzzo said that she would love to have them. Still, Apuzzo said that bicycle lanes will only work in certain sections of the city since many of the roads are narrow. Apuzzo said that they couldnt be added to Gramatan Avenue due to the parking meters and Route 22 is not wide enough to accommodate them. Apuzzo said that bicycle lanes could work on sections of Lincoln Avenue and Sandford Boulevard as well as Devonia Avenue.
I see such incredible things in Brooklyn when it comes to bicycle lanes, Apuzzo said. Its amazing how they reconfigured the streets there. If our residents want this city to be more transit-oriented we need to look at it.
