Mount Vernon Choosing Between Security Cameras

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – Security cameras might be coming to Mount Vernon neighborhoods but the City Council has to decide between two different types before any are installed.

Legislation to purchase 12 cameras from Q-Tip that cost $169.97 each on Amazon.com was held at the City Council meeting on Wednesday to determine if there is a better option. Q-Tip cameras are individual units with a recording device inside them. The other option would be to purchase cameras as part of an isolated surveillance network at the police department. Cost of these cameras has not been released and no legislation to purchase them has appeared before the City Council yet.

Councilman Richard Thomas said that the city should give Police Commissioner Carl Bell more time to compare the systems so the city doesn’t purchase something too hastily.

“We have to compare notes and look at the money we are spending to capture the same people committing crimes,” Thomas said. “It would be too quick of us to purchase the Q-Tip cameras without talking to the commissioner more.”

Councilwoman Karen Watts-Yehudah said that there have been talks of purchasing the Q-Tip cameras over the past couple years but nothing came about it. Still, Watts-Yehudah sad that whatever system the city decides to eventually purchase, residents need to be told that they are there.

Currently there is no formal discussion of where to put the cameras if and when they are purchased. Councilwoman Deborah Reynolds said that they are needed across the city.

“We need to get something to protect people,” Reynolds said. “Putting cameras up right away is a necessity.”
