At approximately noon on Wednesday, the championship motorcade featuring a boisterous crowd that included players, coaches, local politicians, educators, cheerleaders and the band stepped off from the High School, making their way to City Hall for a reception in their honor.

Mount Vernon Schools Superintendent Kenneth Hamilton touted the championship team, who became the first to bring home more than 11 state titles. Mount Vernon claimed their record title last month, winning their first state championship in five years when they topped Fairport 59-48 in a hotly contested match-up in Binghamton.

“Congratulations to our boys for another victory, but a historic victory in the sense that this is the first time there has been 11 state championships, so it is indeed historic,” he said. “Thanks to our coaches for their guidance and mentorship. What you’ve been able to pull from these young men would not have happened without your dedication and the example you set.”

Led by Jason Douglas-Stanley’s 16 points, the Knights capped off their championship season in impressive fashion last month, using their size and speed to capture their 11th Class AA title. Both Douglas-Stanley and Noah Morgan were named to the all-tournament team. John Richardson was also given the sportsmanship award.

“What can you say? Eleven state championships, no other school has done that,” Assemblyman J. Gary Pretlow said. Just think about that. Mount Vernon is 4-square-miles, 65,000 people and can put together teams like this up against the biggest in New York City and the rest of the state.”
