Heavy winds last evening uprooted a number of trees, damaging power lines and making the night dangerous for emergency service personnel, the city said in a statement. The hurricane conditions forced city and Con Edison workers to suspend cleanup efforts for the safety of the workers.
The city says it is working with Con Edison officials to restore power as soon as possible and asks that city residents be patient.
Residents are reminded that if they are without power, they should use battery-powered lamps or flashlights instead of candles to light their homes. They are also reminded to keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed, opening them as minimally as possible to keep the contents inside cool for as long as possible.
Residents whose homes were hit by falling trees should call the Mount Vernon Buildings Department for a safety inspection.
"There are many properties that require our attention and we must prioritize and take the most serious conditions first," the statement says. "Please be patient. We are working as hard as we can to restore normalcy to you and your family as soon as possible."
