Mendez walked into the Ossining police station with his father shortly after noon Friday to inform authorities that he is safe, according to Westchester County Police.

Mendez told police that he had an argument with his parents Thursday night so he decided not to return home, police said. Mendez told police he stayed at the home of a friend in the village of Ossining.

Mendez walked from his friend’s home to the nearby Ossining Police Department, arriving about 12:20 p.m., because he suspected that his parents would have reported him missing to police, police said.

The boy’s father reported the youth missing in the early morning hours today, police said.

The boy had last been seen Thursday afternoon in the vicinity of 239 North Broadway in Sleepy Hollow, police said.

County police had been searching the Sleepy Hollow and Ossining areas in an effort to find him.

Westchester County Police were assisted by multiple police agencies, including the Sleepy Hollow, Tarrytown and Ossining police departments, in searching the area from Tarrytown to Ossining.  Volunteer firefighters from Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown also assisted by helping to search local parks, cemeteries and tunnels for the boy, police said.
