Hutch, Cross County Parkways Rank As Most Dangerous Statewide

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer and White Plains Mayor Thomas Roach were among the elected officials who held a news conference on Tuesday to draw attention to some of New York state's most dangerous parkways.

Last August, police charged a White Plains man for leaving the scene of a multi-car accident on the Hutchinson River Parkway near Mamaroneck Avenue.

Among them, according to state Department of Transportation accident statistics, are the Hutchinson River Parkway near Mamaroneck Avenue in White Plains and the Cross County Parkway -- west of the Sheridan Avenue overpass as well as near the Saw Mill River Parkway in Yonkers.

In Putnam County, the state DOT ranks Interstate-684 near the I-84 interchange as one of the state's most dangerous highways.

Daily Voice recently wrote about several of Westchester's most dangerous intersections here.

Standing at Saxon Woods Park near the Mamaroneck Avenue entrance to the Hutch, Schumer launched a three-pronged effort to analyze dangerous roads and intersections in the Lower Hudson Valley, make safety recommendations and implement them to prevent potentially numerous accidents from happening again. Schumer said the federal government must work with locals in both counties to identify areas of roadway that are in desperate need of improvements in order to improve road safety.

Schumer called on the Federal Highway Administration to conduct a road safety audit and develop recommendations to improve safety on Lower Hudson Valley roadways.

“Westchester and Rockland Counties have some of the highest crash rates in the state, and we must use every tool at our disposal to analyze why and make desperately needed safety improvements,'' Schumer said in a statement. "These dangerous sections of road have been witness to a handful of accidents before, and it is high time we take steps to address safety hazards before it is too late.”

A redesign of the Cross County Parkway between Yonkers and Mount Vernon has been started by the state DOT.
