Owen Lennon, 26, a 2008 graduate of Ramapo High School who played football and tennis for the school, grew up in Pomona, said Rockland County Executive Ed Day.

“The loss of Marine Owen Lennon of Pomona reminds us again that freedom is never free," said Day. "This Marine from Rockland County represented the very best that our young people have to offer.

Day said he has reached out to the Lennon family to let them know that they can count on the support and assistance of the county.

"As the father of two sons who have served in the military, including one still on active duty, I cannot imagine the pain the Lennon family is experiencing," Day said. "The County of Rockland mourns with them.”

The plane, a KC-130, crashed around 4 p.m. Monday in Leflore County, Miss., the military said on Tuesday.

Marine officials said nine members killed were part of a Marine reserve squadron based at Stewart Air National Guard Base, in Newburgh. The other seven soldiers were based in North Carolina.

Marine Major Andrew Aranda said they could not confirm identities at this time, but expected to confirm those lost on Thursday.
