According to AAA, drivers in New York were paying an average of $3.76 per regular gallon, among the most in the country. Nationally, prices are sitting at an average of $3.66 per gallon, up 15 cent from a month ago, but down two cents from one year prior.
Robert Sinclair, the spokesperson for AA New York predicted that this spike would have happened earlier. Refineries switched to the more expensive, eco-friendly summer blend of gasoline back in March.
“We expected that it would happen earlier, but we knew that prices would jump as we approached the summer season,” he said. “Things are going to get very hair during the driving season.”
Locally, according to GasBuddy.com, the cheapest regular gas in Mount Vernon can be found at Speed Gas on 1st Street for $3.69 per gallon, while premium will cost $4.01 per gallon. Gulf on Sandford Boulevard is selling regular gas for $3.75 per gallon.
Alli Davis, who was filling up at Gulf in Eastchester said that she enjoyed the less expensive gas while she could.
“It was certainly nice, but it feels like it was always a matter of time before things skyrocketed,” she said. “We’re travelling to Long Island for the long weekend, hopefully we can find cheaper gas before we head back here.”
