Earlier this week, an unpermitted discharge at the Yonkers Joint Wastewater Treatment Plant on Alexander Street was reported to the DEC, which could have had a potential environmental impact on the Hudson River.
The discharge was reported at approximately 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 22. It lasted less than an hour before officials intervened and began disinfecting. It is not yet known whether any public areas were impacted.
The DEC issued an alert on Friday morning, stating the cause of the discharge was an electrical malfunction due to an unidentified ground fault.
A combined sewer overflow (CSO) is the discharge from a combined sewer system that is caused by snowmelt or storm water runoff, according to the DEC. Most large municipal sewer systems in the state consist of combined sewers in older downtown urban areas with separate sanitary and storm sewers serving outlying tributary suburban areas.
