Apartments, Shops May Rise From Ashes Of Devastating Mount Vernon Fire

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – The site of a 2015 devastating fire in Mount Vernon may spring back to life as housing, according to a report by lohud.com.

An empty lot on Gramatan Avenue in Mount Vernon may be the site of new housing and shops if a developer's proposal is approved by the city. In October, a three-alarm fire wiped out a whole commercial strip and apartments there.

An Ossining developer, 224 Gramatan Avenue LLC, is planning to build an eight-story apartment building on what is now an empty lot that sits catty-corner to La Porte, a new mixed use complex with affordable housing and stores, lohud.com reported.

According to lohud.com, LaPorte’s developer is also putting up a 10-story apartment building nearby.

The three-alarm blaze in October gutted a hair salon, laundry, pizzeria, several other stores and some apartments, the lohud.com report said.

Right next door is Nelson Mandela Community High School.

The new proposal calls for 38 apartments, several stores and 26 parking spaces, although city regulations require 64 spots, lohud.com said.
