YORKTOWN, N.Y. - Like any working mom, Dorothy Forcina doesnt want to have to choose between a rewarding career and a home life. She wants both.
That's why six years ago, the Yorktown resident swapped her two-hour-a-day commute to Wall Street for a job closer to home and set out to do more in her daughter's life.
I wanted to focus on my kids in the community and making it a better place, she said.
She dropped the Metro North train fare, became managing director for the Westchester County Association and picked up a few extracurricular activities along the way. Girl Scout troop leader, religious education teacher and school fundraising guru are now just a few of her titles.
"Sometimes it feels as large as full-time job, but I enjoy helping with the different aspects of the community," she said.
She also wanted to be more than a class mom. Still an active member of the Yorktown School Districts Foundation of Excellence, Forcina recently finished her sixth year as its vice president, for which she helped local teachers apply for around $180,000 in grants.
Last years casino-themed Viva Las Foundation and this Octobers Rock the Foundation are just two of the fundraisers Forcina has helped organize for the non-profit organization.
She was also named the president-elect of the Yorktown High School's Parent Teacher Student Association this past September.
As if her school involvement doesnt rack up enough volunteer hours, she helped the girls in her daughter Nicoles Girl Scout troop complete their silver award projects.
Weve gone on several overnight trips and Ive watched them grow, she said of her Girl Scout troop. Theyre like extended kids to me.
Forcina is also is on the Board of Directors for St. Andrew's Lutheran Church in Yorktown, where she has done everything from teach Sunday school to fundraise.
When she isn't working or volunteering, Forcina spends time with her husband Anthony of 23 years, daughter Nicole and dog McDuff.
