CORTLANDT MANOR, N.Y. -- Ever wonder how movies and TV shows get the sound of blood splattering just so? Or mimic the rustling of leaves?

Leslie Bloome of Peekskill-based Alchemy Post Sound could tell you. The Cortlandt Manor resident was nominated for Outstanding Sound Editing for a Nonfiction Program for the A&E documentary "Cartel Land." Alchemy Post Sound Foley Mixer Ryan Collison and Foley Artist Jonathan Fang were also named in the nomination as were Sound FX Editor Mark Filip, Dialogue Editor Billy Orrico and Sound Designer Sean Garnhart.

Bloome was also individually nominated for his work on the Netflix mini-series, "Making A Murderer." He shares the nomination with Sound Editor Daniel Ward.

The company does a specific kind of sound element called Foley, recreating the sound of anything an actor touches handles or grabs.

So, for example, with blood splatter, Bloome advises soaking a leather car chamois in a bucket of water, then squeezing it to create spraying and squishing sounds. As for leaves rustling, he and his staff layer the sounds of a bamboo or similar plant being continuously stroked or shaken.

And that's just the tip of the iceberg. The team is known for its work for numerous major feature films, long-running television series, independent films and popular games. Alchemy’s services also include music recording, live performance, video production, ADR, and sound design.

Bloome, who previously won an Emmy in 2014 for "Nurse Jackie," has been in the business for close to 30 years. He started working in Los Angeles and moved into his new 3,500-square-foot-studio in 2013. He said he was not expecting the nomination but is glad he got one. He plans to fly to LA for the ceremony.

“'Cartel Land' and 'Making A Murderer' are wonderful documentaries that challenged the creativity and resourcefulness of our Foley crew,” said Bloome. “It is humbling and very satisfying to have our hard work recognized by our peers in the Academy.”

The 68th Emmy Awards will air Sunday, September 18 on ABC.
