MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – All of Westchester County celebrated one of Mount Vernon’s finest this week, honoring prominent community advocate Karen D. Thomas with a day of her very own.

This week, County Legislator Lyndon Williams declared Dec. 7, 2015 as Karen D. Thomas Day throughout Westchester, celebrating all that she has accomplished while serving as a Development Assistant at Wartburg.

Thomas joined Wartburg in 2001 as a community liaison and executive assistant to the president, making her presence felt throughout the community during her 14-year tenure. She has since become “a valued member of the Development Department team, with major emphasis on deepening Wartburg’s partnerships in the community and beyond.”

“As a valued member of the Development team, I couldn’t be prouder to celebrate this honor with (her). I have personally seen her work tirelessly on behalf of the Mount Vernon community to ensure that everyone who resides here lives their best life,” Wartburg Director of Development and Marketing Angela Ciminello, said. “Her level of commitment to her community is exemplary.

Thomas has been a prominent figure in the Mount Vernon community for more than a decade, working with multiple organizations, including the Ben Gordon New Life Foundation, Chamber of Commerce, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change, the Future Society, Inc. and Arts on Third Committee, among others.

Additionally, Thomas has served on advisory boards for the mayor, Junior League of Bronxville and was this year’s recipient for the Award for Years of Service.

“Thomas ahs been the designated representative for Wartburg for as long as many of us can remember,” Wartburg President David Gentner said. “Through her work with the Chamber, Karen has enabled Wartburg to optimize our organization’s value to the community in many ways.”

Johnson made sure the whole county was aware that Monday was Karen D. Thomas Day, prominently posting it on the video screen outside of Westchester County Center in White Plains.

“I am proud of this honorific award and continue to be a part of the Mount Vernon Chamber of Commerce,” Thomas said. “And, like Wartburg’s mission to serve those in need, I am thankful for Wartburg’s support of my advocacy efforts on behalf of the Mount Vernon community.

“What an honor. My heart is overwhelmed with thanks and praise.”
