The event will take place at First United Methodist Church at 227 E. Lincoln Ave., off Summit Avenue. The Back to School Bash, co-sponsored by 1 Change at a Time, will feature performances by the campers, raffles, educational speakers, school supply giveaways, a barbecue and more.
Some notable guests confirmed to attend are Mayor Ernie Davis, Chamber of Commerce President Dwayne Brown, Ralph Burts, principal of Nelson Mandela High School, and more.
1 Change At A Time, led by Leonard Abbott, seeks to promote leadership among young men and women by serving community programs that focus on volunteerism, youth development and mentorship.
Y-COP offered its fourth successful camp season since 2012, with 125 children, ages 6-12, enrolled. Y-COP strives to provide an experience unlike the typical camp in an urban setting. Youths enjoyed nature walks, rock climbing, fishing, horseback riding, swim instruction and other outdoor recreational activities.
“For most of Y-COP program participants, there are far and few opportunities for kids to be exposed to a different environment than what they experience in the city,” said Henry Wilson, Y-COP’s executive director. “For many children, it was their first time fishing or going horseback riding. These children may not have enjoyed these experiences if it were not for the Y-COP camp. Swim instruction also is important as children who reside in urban areas are disproportionately more likely to drown, compared with their peers who have access to pools.” The seven-week camp session, governed by the Westchester County Department of Health, was held Monday to Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., convenient for working parents.
Y-COP’s goal is to provide high quality, positive programs led by experienced, caring individuals in a safe, nurturing environment at an affordable rate.
