Key supporters included state Sen. Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester), the Fleetwood Neighborhood Association, Goldman Sachs and local Boy and Girl Scout troops, according to a press release.

Klein donated trash bags, bottles of water and hired a graffiti-removal service for the event.

“Over the last 20 years, I have made both graffiti removal and community beautification projects a top priority in my district,” Klein said in a press release. “The Bronx is our home and as such, I refuse to let vandals tag our buildings and overpasses, litter our streets and ultimately create time-consuming, expensive clean-up jobs for hard-working business owners and community members.

“I’m proud to co-host this clean-up day with the Fleetwood Neighborhood Association and I look forward to our work together as we continue to improve the quality of life for countless residents across the Bronx and Westchester.”

The event began with breakfast at the Fleetwood Deli Café.

Volunteers then picked up debris and trash, removed graffiti and planted flowers, especially in the business district.

The day concluded with a free lunch for volunteers at the Fleetwood Deli Cafe.

“Keeping our neighborhoods clean and green for local residents is critically important,” Pat Monahan, a board member of the Fleetwood Neighborhood Association, said in a press release. “The Fleetwood business district is a point of pride for our community and we thank Senator Klein for his commitment to keeping our neighborhoods safe.

“Today’s clean up was a huge success and I commend all the local volunteers who came out and donated their time. I look forward to many more great events in the future - working together with Senator Klein and the Fleetwood Neighborhood Association.”
