The Truman Scholarship is awarded each year to college juniors who show exceptional leadership potential and are committed to careers in public service.

The Swarthmore College junior was awarded $30,000 for graduate study, will get priority admission and extra financial aid at certain graduate schools, leadership training, career counseling and a 10-week internship in Washington, D.C.

This is not the first time Uka has earned accolades for her academic accomplishments. Last year, she earned the Eugene M. Lang Opportunity Scholarship, which provides six college sophomores $10,000 in funding to conceive and carry out a project that creates a needed social resource.

Uka is studying political science and educational studies, with an eye toward a master’s degree in educational leadership. She is developing a computer literacy course for adult learners preparing to take the GED through her Lang Scholarship.
