The Mount Vernon Youth Bureau has hired youth ages 14 to 21 in local businesses and organizations to gain hands on work experience. Each year, the bureau struggles to find funding to support the youth placements during the summer. However, there are various funding sources from local, county, state and federal governments that support the summer job programs.
“The city is dedicated to giving our youth opportunities to earn money and learn the responsibilities of having a job. Through summer youth employment, our young people are developing the skill sets that they will need to become economically self sufficient," said Mayor Ernest D. Davis.
“Summer jobs are critical for our entire community, not just for the youth. Many agencies rely on summer youth workers to help in their local business operations. Local government offices, health care facilities, day camps, schools, churches and other community organizations benefit from having additional support while the youth gain transferable skills and workplace experience," said DaMia Harris-Madden, executive director of the Mount Vernon Youth Bureau.
