Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas will be joined by members of the Public Safety Commission and community activists at Mount Vernon High School Friday to address the killings of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Philandro Castro in Minnesota and several police officers in Dallas on Thursday night.
According to Thomas, he has been meeting with community leaders, law enforcement officials and the school district to educate to “ensure that we learn from national tragedies and apply best practices to enhance public safety.”
“We mourn for the families and loved ones of (the victims). We are inspired by the words of President Barack Obama, Beyonce and other national leaders who have spoken up and urged action in the face of violence and fear,” he said. “I will be joined today by members of the Mount Vernon Safety Commission and area activists such as Cynthia Turnquist-Jones and Nazarene Duncan.
“Many in our community have felt the sting of losing someone to violence. We are actively uniting and working together to achieve justice and peace. Black lives matter. Blue lives matter. All lives matter.”
The “All Lives Matter” press conference will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday at the high school.
