MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – Mount Vernon’s citywide spelling champion Letia Jones, an A.B. Davis Middle School student was eliminated in the second round of the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.
Letia was tripped up by the word “witloof” – chicory of a broad-leaved variety grown for blanching – spelling it “witloaf,” which eliminated her from the international competition.
The semifinals and finals of the Spelling Bee were aired live on television, first on ESPN2 and later on ESPN. The event was eventually won by New York resident Arvind Mahankali on the word “knaidel.”
In all, 281 spellers representing all 50 states, Europe, Asia and the Americas battled it out for five rounds before Mahankali was crowned champion.
