In a story that will hit newsstands on May 13, Lewinsky opened up about her affair with former President Bill Clinton, which nearly forced him out of the country’s highest office.
In the essay, the former White House intern revealed her regret over the affair and expressed her dread of a potential presidential run for Chappaqua’s Hillary Clinton in 2016.
In Yonkers, Mount Vernon resident Louisa Guarascio questioned why Lewinsky would go public after nearly two decades.
“The timing seems strange to me. It’s been so long, it’s like she’s looking for the spotlight again,” she said. “I’m not real into politics, but I don’t know why she would do this now.”
According to Lewinsky, she was inspired by Tyler Clementi, an 18-year-old Rutgers student that committed suicide in 2010 after being unknowingly filmed kissing a man in his dorm. Lewinsky said, “my own suffering took on a different meaning. Perhaps by sharing my story, I might be able to help others in the darkest moments of humiliation.”
Not everyone is buying Lewinsky’s altruistic notion, however. Lynne Cheney, the wife of former Republican Vice President Dick Cheney, suggested that the Clintons may be the brain trust behind the essay as they gear up for a possible White House run.
“I really wonder if this isn’t an effort on the Clintons’ part to get that story out of the way,” she said during an interview on ‘The O’Reilly Factor’ on Fox News Tuesday night. “Would Vanity Fair publish anything about Monica Lewinsky that Hillary didn’t want in Vanity Fair?”
In Mount Vernon, Michael Hudson wasn’t picking up what the Cheney’s were putting down, noting that while he’s sure there are political moves in play, he didn’t believe that the Clintons were behind Lewinsky’s piece.
“To me, it sounds like she’s eager to get this off her chest and finally move past it,” he said. “I’m eager to read the full story, I’m sure that will provide a greater insight into what everyone’s motives are.”
