“Jermaine Shirley received this award for saving his neighbor's 11-month-old twin boys from a fire, after alerting other residents that their building was on fire,” said Congressman Engel. “He is a true hero and I am pleased that the National Association of Letter Carriers recognized him for his bravery.”

Shirley was about to leave for work on Dec. 19, 2013, when he smelled smoke in his apartment building. He alerted his neighbors, and called 9-1-1 after realizing his building was on fire.
