Graham Middle School seventh grader Edwina Belizaire has been chosen as one of 64 middle school girls to enter Project Engage, a hands-on engineering immersion program for the state’s top high school girls.

Her classmate, Shyanne Escoffery-Fullwood, may be joining her in Syracuse this summer, after being wait listed among thousands of applicants throughout the state.

Every summer, members of Syracuse’s College of Engineering and Computer Science hosts a one-week camp where the girls “experience hands-on learning from engineering and computer science faculty and travel to local landmarks and companies.” Each day of the program is diverse, and represents a dynamic opportunity to discover the uses and importance of technological development for students.

Participants with Project Engage – which runs from Sunday, July 5 to Friday, July 10 this year – will meet fellow female engineers, and experience the role women play in STEM development. In order to even be considered for Project Engage, the students had to go through an arduous process that includes personal essays and multiple applications.

According to school officials, “through it all, the girls meet with women engineers and learn firsthand about the vital role women play in advancing science, technology and, ultimately, the betterment of society. By the end of the program, the girls will have learned that math and science skills are only part of the career equation and that creativity, working well in teams, communicating ideas effectively and understanding other cultures are equally important.”
