Mount Vernon High School Fish Hatchery Program Release Brown Trout

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. -- The students of Mount Vernon High School received a lesson recently in both ichthyology and parenting during this year’s trout release at the school’s fish hatchery.

More than 30 hatchery students took part in releasing 300-plus fish on May 5 at the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, where they learned about the life cycle of the brown trout from egg development to fingerling stage.

Students also learned basics about water temperature, filtration and the different bio systems that occur in the tanks.

Saying goodbye to the fish they’d raised in the classroom proved somewhat difficult for some students.

“They actually missed seeing the fish they raised and the humming of the water coolers chilling the fish,” said Mount Vernon teacher Peter Wynn in a statement.

School faculty members joining Wynn on May 5 at the release were Carl Caprio, Robin Carpus, Henry Nardozzi and Principal Ronald Gonzalez.

Entergy Inc. awarded the Fish Hatchery at Mount Vernon High School a grant in 2015, which will be used to purchase additional equipment for the program. The school’s fish hatchery program was created in 2006 and relies on donated eggs from the New York State Department of Environmental Protection and Trout Unlimited.
