MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. The Haven Community Center in Mount Vernon will expand its programming in the next few weeks with programs for youth and adults.
Barbara Swain, CEO of the Universal Community Development Corporation, which operates the community center at 403 E. Third St., said tutors will be available after school to help younger kids beginning in September. Haven Community Center Executive Director Jimi Orekoya said the program will teach tutors how to become leaders to their younger peers. Additionally, the center will hold classes for people studying for their GEDs.
A lot of people in Mount Vernon dont really know where to send their kids, Swain said. They dont want them roaming around. We figure wed open up this program if they needed help in their classes. Our location is a good space for activities but a lot of people dont know that we are here.
Swain said the community center utilizes A-students who can help struggling children. Swain said the tutoring focuses mainly on math, science and reading and that the ultimate goal is to build a preschool daycare facility on site.
Orekoya said the Haven Community Center is also offering job development training for adults, adding that many jobs the center trains people for don't require a high school diploma or GED. Swain said people are already registered for the program and orientation is ready to begin.
Through a similar program over the past year, Swain said, the center has been able to find jobs for people. Swain said the center is hoping to teach maintenance and HVAC services if and when money becomes available.
