Mount Vernon City Council to Recognize Outstanding Citizens

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – Mount Vernon City Council will honor several outstanding local citizens, present and past, at its Wednesday, Nov. 12, meeting.

The ceremony will be held in the council chambers at City Hall at 7 p.m.

City officials plan to honor the following people:

  • Mount Vernon Auxiliary Police Department members Chief Freda Horsley and Capts. Brenda Kamp and Leonard Simmons.
  • Arthur E. Crawford, a youth advocate and mentor.
  • James Simmons, a legendary Little League baseball coach.
  • Idelia Cohen, Gussie Harris, Paula Korall, Elizabeth Moore, Loretta Novick, Lavinia Smith, and Barbara Webster – the “Rapping Grannies” of the Mount Vernon Intergenerational Community Choir.
  • The late Alex and Mildred Saunders, entrepreneurs who were among the first African-American property owners in Mount Vernon.

The ceremony will be held at Mount Vernon City Hall, One Roosevelt Square North.
