Mount Vernon Church Offers Vegetables To Seniors

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – Bowen Memorial Church is making fresh vegetables and produce available for senior citizens straight from their farm upstate in Goshen, which they deliver on a weekly basis.

The Rev. Hugh Farrish said the church's mission statement is to serve senior citizens and the underprivileged. Farrish said the vegetables are grown organically with no pesticides and distributed to seniors in New Rochelle, Mount Vernon and the Bronx.

"We offer nine different types of vegetables, from corn to peppers," Farrish said. "A lot of seniors can't afford fresh produce. We started this 11 years ago, growing fruits and vegetables in people's backyards before we had the farm upstate."

Felicia Medley, assistant church clerk at Bowen, was one of many volunteers outside the church at 14 N. Columbus Ave. on Saturday. Bowen said the church strives to be compassionate to seniors and help them as much as they can.

The fresh produce also is for sale in the parking lot of the church Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. For more information, call (914) 207-3275.
