Mount Vernon officials introduced the stamp on Wednesday. It will be featured nationwide as the country continues to celebrate Black History month.

An architect, Taylor is credited as the first African-American to enter the business. He is believed to be the first African-American to graduate from Massachusetts Institute of Technology more than a decade before.

The son of a former slave, Taylor was brought in by Booker T. Washington at the Tuskegee Institute to show what African-Americans were capable of.

From there, “Taylor designed and oversaw the construction of dozens of new buildings built in an elegant, dignified style that befitted his personality,” according to city officials.

“As most people know, I am an architect by trade,” Mount Vernon Mayor Ernest Davis stated. “This is such an honor, especially for black architects. Robert Taylor contributed to increasing the number of blacks to architecture. His designs at Tuskgee University still stand today and inspire yet another generation through his vision and longevity.”
