MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. -- Jazz in June: A Wartburg Celebration of Arts & Music, a fundraiser held June 10 at Glen Island Harbour Club in New Rochelle, netted $135,000. The money will benefit Wartburg, the adult care community in Mount Vernon.

The gala drew 275 guests and had 19 sponsors, including Lecesse Construction, Mintz Levin PC, Lutheran Services New York Alliance, and Morrison Senior Living and Patient Care Associates. Entertainment was provided by Kate Davis, an award-winning singer, musician and songwriter who has performed at the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center and The Blue Note. “This year’s gala was a special evening for all guests, honorees and sponsors and an immense fundraising success,” David J. Gentner, president and CEO of Wartburg, said. “These general purpose funds will help Wartburg improve and expand its adult day care services, assisted and independent living programs, as well as our nursing home programs for the senior citizens of Westchester County.” The Rev. Dr. Dale G. Gatz and Yvonne K. Gatz, former president and first lady of Wartburg, were also recognized during the event. During Gatz’s tenure, from 1991 to 2004, Wartburg expanded facilities on the campus, including a state-of-the-art nursing and rehabilitation facility, the Henry G. & Jeannette A. Waltermade Health Care Center, and the building of Meadowview Assisted Living. His wife was an active volunteer in the community, especially a storytelling group, and she was a member of the Wartburg Ladies Auxiliary. “We are delighted to honor Rev. Dr. Gatz,” the Rev. Amandus Der, who is a Wartburg board chair and Jazz in June steering committee member. “His leadership at the turn of the century helped to fashion the Wartburg that we know today.” Wartburg was recently cited as one of the “Best Nursing Homes in New York State” in U.S. News & World Report. It is a nonprofit Lutheran ministry that serves all faiths. Skilled nursing care, Alzheimer’s and dementia care, assisted and independent living, rehabilitation, home care, adult daycare and many more services are available.
