Cats Up For Adoption In Mount Vernon And Pelham

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – Looking for a furry friend to share your home? Kittens and older cats are up for adoption Saturdays at Petco in Mount Vernon, near Pelham.

Eileen Hanavan, Manager of Mobile Adoption Events for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) said that the group is out around Westchester County and New York City four time a week and finds homes for about 25 cats each month. Hanavan said that, last month, the ASPCA placed 34 cats.

"Adoptions vary with the seasons," Hanavan said. "We are trying to build up a presence in each of these communities so we can adopt more cats. There is always overflow and if you adopt a cat it clears up a space for a homeless cat."

Cats and kittens adopted from the ASPCA cost between $75 and $125 and come already neutered or spayed. All cats are micro-chipped and are up to date on their vaccinations. Hanavan, who worked upstate in Delaware County at a small municipal shelter before coming to work in the New York City area, said adoption is the best way to go with pets.

"If you are shopping for animals, you're probably supporting puppy and cat mills," Hanavan said. "These animals are just as good and you get a lifetime of love.

The Mount Vernon Petco is located at 500 East Sandford Blvd. The phone number is 914-699-3270.

The ASPCA headquarters is located at 424 E. 92nd St. in Manhattan. For more information, check out their website .
