Working through the American Cancer Society, the NFL provided funding as part of its “A Crucial Catch” initiative for Open Door Family Medical Centers in Port Chester, according to the statement, which said that the funding was officially awarded on Oct. 25 during “A Crucial Catch Day.”

The Oct. 25 ceremony featured representatives of the American Cancer Society along with George Martin, who was captain of the New York Giants when the team won Super Bowl XXI, according to the NFL.

More than 100 women attended the ceremony, where they received breast cancer education and screenings, blood pressure screenings, and demonstrations in healthy cooking, pilates and tai chi, according to the statement.

Working with the NFL, the American Cancer Society provides local communities across the country with funding through Community Health Advocates implementing National Grants for Empowerment (CHANGE) grants, according to statement.

According to the American Cancer Society, CHANGE grants are specifically aimed at increasing the level and quality of care in less fortunate communities where racial and ethnic minorities often live in order to “eliminate disparities.”

“The American Cancer Society is honored to partner with the NFL and Open Door Family Medical Centers to help bridge the health disparities gap in Westchester County,” said Patrice Lestrange Mack, American Cancer Society communications manager, in a statement.

According to the American Cancer Society, CHANGE grants have funded more than 260,000 outreach and education events while providing more than 120,000 breast cancer screenings since the program began in 2012.
