The Grammy-nominated R&B singer was a guest of Mayor Ernest Davis on Tuesday, as the Mount Vernon High School football standout filmed scenes for “Unsung,” a documentary series that airs on TV One.
Sure is the second native Mount Vernon rapper to be profiled on “Unsung” – which follows the rise and fall of hop artists, only to chronicle their ascent back into the spotlight - following the late Dwight “Heavy D” Miles, whose episode aired in 2013.
According to officials running “Unsung,” ”The series uncovers the stories behind once well-known R&B and soul music artists who exploded onto the Billboard music charts with a string of hits, only to have their career derailed by a major crisis that caused them to be essentially unappreciated by later generations of contemporary R&B and soul music listeners.”
Davis was elated to have one of Mount Vernon’s most popular celebrity sons once again walking the city streets. Filming was originally scheduled to take place near City Hall early on Tuesday morning, but it had to be pushed later into the afternoon.
“It’s always great when those raised in Mount Vernon return home, be it for a day or to relocate,” he stated. “Home is where the heart is, and returning is a demonstration of caring, so we welcome home Al B. Sure.”
