Mount Vernon Lays Claim To At Least One Oscar Winner

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- From actors to directors to screenwriters, Westchester residents seemingly have had a seat at the table come Oscar night, which will be on Sunday.

Mount Vernon resident Denzel Washington has been nominated for six Academy Awards for his roles in "Cry Freedom," "Glory," "Malcom X," "The Hurricane," "Training Day," and "Flight," winning for "Glory" and "Training Day."

Washington attended Pennington-Grimes Elementary School in Mount Vernon and was a regular at the Mount Vernon Boys Club.

Bedford couple Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones both have Academy Awards. Douglas won in 1976 for producing "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" and in 1988 for "Wall Street."

Zeta-Jones won Best Supporting Actress in 2003 for "Chicago."

Bedford's Glenn Close has been nominated for six Academy Awards but has yet to take home the shiny statue. She was nominated three straight years for Best Supporting Actress from 1982 to 1984 for "The World According To Garp," "The Big Chill," and "The Natural," and later received nominations for "Fatal Attraction," "Dangerous Liasions," and "Albert Knobbs."

Armonk's Ron Howard is a four-time nominee and a two-time winner. As producer and director, Howard took home two statuettes for "A Beautiful Mind," and was nominated twice for "Frost/Nixon."

Benh Zeitlin, a Hastings High School graduate, was nominated for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay for "Beasts of the Southern Wild."

Larchmont resident Ang Lee is a five-time nominee and two-time winner. Lee became the first Asian to win Best Director when he won in 2005 for "Brokeback Mountain." He has also been nominated for his work producing and directing "Life of Pi" and "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon."

David O. Russell grew up in Larchmont and attended Mamaroneck High School where he was voted Class Rebel. He has been nominated five times for his work on "The Fighter," "Silver Linings Playbook" and "American Hustle."

This year, Westchester is represented by Bennett Miller and Dan Futterman for their work on "Foxcatcher."  The Mamaroneck High School classmates were also nominated for their work on "Capote."
