WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Recent research suggests household pets can transmit infection to people with weakened immune systems, including seniors, pregnant women and children, according to reports.

The Canadian Medical Association Journal said that infection can be spread via bites, scratches, saliva or animal waste, CTV News reported. 

The largest culprits in the study were reptiles, who were responsible for 11 percent of Salmonella infections in people under 21 in the study, CTV News said.
