WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- After a two-year hiatus, Westchester Community College women's and men's basketball teams are gearing up for the 2017 season with new head coaches for the upcoming campaign.
“I am pleased to be able to announce that basketball is returning to Westchester Community College,” said the college’s Athletic Director, Mike Belfiore. “We have begun to recruit players for both teams and look forward to the fall when our student-athletes will again be able to compete against other institutions in the region.”
After completing a nationwide coaching search that garnered interest from former professional basketball players and several highly touted coaches, the college's athletic board selected Sean Kelly as the men’s coach and Nesta Felix as the women’s coach.
Prior to assuming his role at Westchester Community College, Kelly's Bronx Community College teams posted a 74-43 record over five seasons, advancing to an NJCAA regional title game and two regional Final Fours. Felix served as the head women’s basketball coach at Yeshiva University from 2012 to 2015 and was named the Hudson Valley Athletic Conference Co-Coach of the Year in 2014.
With the newly formed coaching staff begins recruiting players for the upcoming season, school administrators and staff are excited about the return of basketball to Valhalla. “This promises to be an enriching experience for many of our students,” said Dr. Belinda S. Miles, president of Westchester Community College. “The student athletes will have an opportunity to showcase their skills on the court, while their fellow students will be able to show their enthusiasm and exhibit school spirit during the upcoming season. This will truly enhance the overall college experience for all.”
A member of NJCAA Division Two collegiate athletics, Westchester Community College will begin play this upcoming November.
