Mount Vernon...Did You Know?

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. - Mount Vernon, did you know that St. Paul's Church, located at 897 S. Columbus Ave, was built in 1764.

During the Revolutionary War's Battle of Pell's Point the church served as a hospital for soldiers of the British Army. The bell that hangs from the church tower was made in 1758 at the same place where the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia was made. During the battle, George Washington told those loyal to his army to bury the bell to prevent the British from melting it down and turning it into ammunition.

The church was designated as a National Historical Site in 1943 but was not formally authorized by the government until 1978.
