MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – A sarcastic rant by actress Mila Kunis on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Tuesday has led to a discussion between Mount Vernon parents over who actually can say they’re pregnant when a couple is expecting.
In her monologue, Kunis – who is pregnant with her first child with Ashton Kutcher – mockingly berated men who say “we’re” pregnant, lamenting that the woman is the one who is pregnant and making sacrifices, not the entirety of the couple.
The joke began when the late night host mentioned that he and his wife Molly McNearney are also expecting a child soon. This led Kunis to question if both of them are really having the baby, or if Kimmel is just along for the ride.
“Stop saying ‘we’re’ pregnant. You’re not pregnant. Are you crying alone in your car listening to a stupid Bette Midler song? No,” she mused. “When you wake up and throw up, is it because you are nurturing a human life? No. It’s because you had too many shots of tequila. You know how many shots of tequila we had? None.”
Although Kunis was joking, when probed about the subject, a Mount Vernon couple with a 2-year-old daughter debated the merits of both sides of the discussion.
“When I was pregnant with Keela, I think we would say that ‘we’ were pregnant, it just sounds more natural to me, and he is the father after all,” Amanda Paige said on Thursday, June 12, in Mount Vernon. “I was literally carrying the baby, but believe me, I made (husband Rob’s) life crazy. He earned it.”
Paige’s husband agreed with his wife, adding that it takes two to conceive a life together, and both sides have to make sacrifices.
“I guess it would be fair to question, since it is such a burden on the woman, but she couldn’t have gotten pregnant without me, so wouldn’t that make the both of us pregnant when she’s expecting,” he pondered. “I’m of the opinion it’s a team effort.”
What do you think? When a couple is expecting, is it fair for the man to say he’s also pregnant even though his wife is carrying the baby? Vote in our poll and continue the conversation in the comments section.
