Mount Vernon Mayor Announces Winners Of 'Snapchat Geo-Tag Challenge'

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. - After calling on the city's most creative minds, Mayor Richard Thomas announced five winners of his "Snapchat Geo-tag Challenge" as he attempts to put Mount Vernon on the (millennial) map.

Last month, as part of his latest social media initiative, Thomas announced the “Snapchat Geo-tag Challenge: Put Mount Vernon on the Millennial Map” for graphic illustrators, artists and designers, with the goal of selecting a “geo-tag” from a pool of local artists that will be officially submitted to Snapchat.

According to Thomas, "the submissions received were overwhelming, creative and captured the true essence of Mount Vernon. The final submissions were given to the City Council to review and make suggestions on as well as to local stakeholders."

"This is what you can expect when we are creative and productive in Mount Vernon. We received numerous submissions that will help place Mount Vernon on the millennial map and reshape our future," he said. "To have picked one winner would’ve been an injustice to all of the great submissions from the people of Mount Vernon. We can look forward to doing more of these challenges going forward and engaging with the community to bring fun back to our great city.”

This is just the latest attempt for Thomas to connect with his constituents through social media, having used various platforms during his campaign to unseat Ernie Davis as mayor and in the first few months of his time in office.

“Snapchat is an innovative and cool way to stay involved with what’s going on around you. Our community has incredibly talented individuals who can create a unique geo-tag to capture the spirit and rich culture of Mount Vernon,” Thomas stated. “This is another way to #ConnectMV and empower the residents to shape our digital identity as a sports, entertainment, heavy manufacturing, construction, jobs and beautiful homes destination."
