MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – Mount Vernon residents are invited to spin over to Gramatan Avenue Saturday to take part in the city's third annual Bike-A-Thon to promote fitness and health.
The event, scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon, is hosted by the city's recreation department to encourage physical activity.
Registration is required. The cost is $10 in advance and $15 on site. There are a limited number of bikes available to rent for $15, which includes the use of a helmet.
The starting and ending point for the Bike-A-Thon is Gramatan Avenue and Broad Street.
The program began in 2012 as an effort to raise awareness of childhood obesity. About 60 people rode a loop that started at Maggie Spillanes's on Gramatan Avenue to Sidney Avenue up to Westchester Avenue and back during that first year.
