MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – The Mount Vernon Recreation Department is encouraging children to get out of the house this summer with a wide variety of day camp options and activities.
Each of three summer day camps will run from July 8 through Aug. 16. The six-week session will cost $550, with after camp activities running at $300.
Junior Summer Day Camp will be held at the Traphagen Elementary School on Lexington Avenue. Activities at the junior day camp are specifically designed for children ages 5 through 7.
The Senior Summer Camp is for older children between 7 and 12-years-old at the Holmes Elementary School on North Columbus Avenue. The camp will include swimming, field trips and other age-appropriate activities.
After-Camp Activities will be held each day from 3:30 to 6 p.m. at the Doles Community Center on South Sixth Avenue. There will be snacks and organized activities for all participants.
There is also a series of special camps that include sports programs and activities for children with special needs.
Rose Simon Day Camp provides specialized program children with disabilities including mental retardation, cerebral palsy, neurological impairment, epilepsy and autism. Registration includes free door-to-door training, breakfast and lunch. For more information, call (914) 665-2437.
Beginning July 8, and running through the middle of August, there will be will be soccer, basketball and track and field camps for children as old as 17-years-old.
The soccer clinic will be held in partnership with White Plains-based Backyard Sports. There will be three, two-week sessions for children of all ages at Hutchinson Field. The first session is from July 8 through July 18; the second is from July 22 to Aug. 1 and the last is from Aug. 5 through Aug. 15. The program – which costs $120 per session - will run from Monday through Thursday from 3:30 to 6 p.m. each day.
For those who don’t want to take to the soccer field, there will be a track and field clinic on the same dates and at the same time at the Mount Vernon High School. Children between the ages of 7 and 12 can learn the basics of running track before they get to high school.
Lastly, there will be a six-week basketball clinic at the Mount Vernon High School for children between 7 and 17-years-old. The program is designed to introduce players to the fundamentals of basketball from dribbling to passing and shooting. The program will run from 1 to 5 p.m. on weekdays between July 8 and Aug. 16. Each week will cost $75. Parents interested in registering their children up for any of these clinics can do so at the Mount Vernon Recreation Department.
