Despite being one of the largest casinos in the United States, Mohegan Sun is closely controlled by members of the Mohegan tribe, which numbers little more than its hotel on a fully booked evening.

“We are a government first, and therefore are both citizens of the Mohegan tribe and the state of Connecticut and the United States,” said Mohegan Tribe Chief Marilyn Malerba. “We have always operated as a government with citizens exerting pressure on our leaders and they in turn providing leadership and exerting pressure as well.”

Despite a small membership -- Chief Malerba says the tribe has just over 2,000 current members --the Mohegan tribe has been able to make its presence known in the big-bucks business of gaming.

“Our casino’s proximity to New York, Boston, Connecticut and Rhode Island makes it strategically a great destination and because of what we have built here, we’ve been very successful,” explained Bobby Sopher, President of the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority.
