Celebrated annually on May 28, the origins of National Hamburger Day are unknown.

The ground beef patties originated in Hamburg, Germany, but Americans put them on a bun and made them into an iconic food classic, gobbling almost 50 billion a year, according to punchbowl.com.

The classic hamburger is credited to Seymour, Wis., home of the annual festival called Burger Fest.

Seymour is also where the world's largest hamburger debuted in 2001, weighing in at 8,266 pounds.

The Library of Congress credits Louis Lassen with selling the first burger in New Haven, Conn. out of his small lunch wagon, according to punchbowl.com.

The first fast food burger was launched in 1940 in San Bernardino, Calif. by Richard and Maurice McDonald.
